Learn how to sew clothes – free sewing classes for beginners

Today I am celebrating my twenty-fifth birthdays and accidentally this is the time I decided to create a website regarding sewing. Just a coincidence. But then I thought maybe it is some kind of a sign? I start something new in the day I was born. In such beautifully rounded anniversary. I hope that my page will bring me and you a lot of joy and inspiration. I hope that my tutorial will learn you how to sew clothes. Maybe it will help someone to find the passion just like I found.

sew by handBut what is my passion? Creating, painting, moulding, gluing, renewing, processing, and other similar things. However, I wish to focus on one particular thing that among all these activities bring me the most joy. Sewing! Since I can remember I was re-making clothes, trying to design something and then do it. With time, the things I had in mind were too complicated for me to have enough patience to create them manually.

I really wanted to know how to start sewing clothes. One year ago my husband has made me very happy – I’ve got a sewing machine! Now all I can think of is sewing. I am slowly completing my projects. I’ve got more and more materials, threads, and trinkets. It makes me happy. I want to share this happiness with you because how long I can bother my husband with things like “Look at the dress I just sewed. Do you like it? Come on, tell me you like it!” My sewing career began with circle skirt, but when I noticed that I am doing pretty nice, I decided to take a look at more complex stuff.

Before I boast with the things I just sewed, I’ve got a small surprise for those, who want to start their sewing journey, but they don’t know how to do that. I was motivated by a lot of e-mails, which I received from you all. In there, you ask me if sewing is difficult, where I did learn to sew clothes, can I learn by myself, and how to start it.

free sewing classesWell girls, sewing isn’t difficult. Download my free sewing classes and you will learn how to start sewing and how to sew by hand. In my tutorial you can find really easy sewing projects for beginners. The only two things it requires are your time and patience. You don’t have to go on courses, because they will not teach you things you would learn in tailoring schools. And the basics, which you need in order to sew something by yourself, can be acquired on your own.

Is sewing expensive?

easy sewing projects for beginnersIt all depends on what you want to sew. If someone likes to sit every evening in front of machine and sew, sew, and once again sew, then usually people need to buy cloths and sew everything that comes to your mind. Most often you come up with plenty of beautiful, but necessarily not useful things. Once you start sewing, you will surely want to have a better sewing machine, overlock, or embroidery machine. In these cases, usual sewing costs quite a lot, but as a wise man once said: “Happy is the man who is living by his hobby”.

If you are dreaming about a wardrobe full of original clothes, then you will surely need to spend fortune on cloths that will transform into variety of outfits. In here; however, you may not think about purchasing super extra incredibly amazing machine, and most of things you sew will come in handy in your life.

sew a buttonYou can always take a strategy – I am sewing, not buying. This tactics lets you not only spend very little on your hobby, but it will also help you save some cash. It’s because simple dress costs $50, and sewing it is $20, so we can see how much we may save. A lot of my friends learn with my free online sewing classes and save money. Now they are know how to stitch and how to sew a button.

There are also girls, who are not only saving on this hobby. They even make money! They sew beautiful Tildas, blankets, or clothes, and they sell it.

How much do the materials cost?

hand sewing stitchesThe answer is simple – it depends. As all the products, materials vary with its quality and price. I, for example, pay $50 for cloth in my favourite shop. More expensive are artificial leather, lace, wool, or fur (these can cost more than $100). The cheaper ones are tulle and many others. Silk or Italian lace will also be expensive (they can cost even $200 per metre). You just need to visit the first fabric store (even online one) you stumble upon to take a look at prices. However, it is better to go to local shop, because someone, who doesn’t sew, will have difficulties in picturing how material from the picture looks in real life.

It is worth to remember that we need to include thread and other elements like for example zip fastener, buttons, and trimming to the cost of sewing the whole thing.

How much do the tailoring accessories cost?

When sewing becomes your new hobby, there is always something new we need to buy – new lovely tape measure, new feet, but to be honest there is only one thing truly important, and that is tailoring machine. We should also have sharp scissors (not necessarily tailoring ones, cause they are quite expensive). You also need tailoring measure, tailor’s cloth, machine needles (needles will dull or break with time), and of course pencil and copy paper.

sew a zipperIn my free online sewing classes for beginners I will show you where you can find free patterns, and where to buy them the best. You can also find diy sewing projects, hand sewing stitches and how to stitch. You will also learn for example how to sew a zipper.

Is it better to sew or to buy?

When you are sewing, you can have original and unconventional project. Designed by you. And if there is only one thing like that, how to check whether it’s valuable? You can sew something simple with the use of cheap materials (or second-hand cloth) and spend pennies on it. Or you can sew something incredible with expensive fabrics and spend on the materials much more than in local shop.

However, if I go to the shop and see simple circle skirt or simple blouse for $35, then it is definitely much better to sew it yourself, taking into account the price of the cloth.

Despite that, I tend to buy quite often – why? Because I don’t have enough time. Just add your time to the price of materials and you will know that in order to sew such thing, you have to spend a lot of time. That is why if the price suits me, I buy things. I prefer to sew something I am not going to find in the shop (in other words original style is more important in sewing than saving, at least for me).

Is sewing difficult?

sew clothesIn my opinion sewing is not difficult if you are looking for simple things to sew. For me, everyone should handle sewing simple skirt if you have pattern. With my free sewing classes you will definitely sew clothes. There are; however, more difficult elements from others that require a lot of experience. But most of all, sewing requires two qualities – the sense of aesthetics, because carelessly sewed dress looks cheap and tacky, and patience – because sometimes something needs to be unpicked. Sometimes we need to overstitch the edges, because it takes too long to sew some element.

How long does it take to learn how to sew?

learn to sewSewing is not a rocket science – you just sit and sew! While sewing, you learn more and more about specific elements of this hobby. You try harder and harder designs. How much does it take for you to become a pro? One will take one year, and another one may never learn everything. It all depends on how long you sew and how many difficult projects you take. Here’s one rule: Practice makes perfect.

I will just add that it is good to take old things and unpick them on the smallest elements, or just analyse each detail and every seam in your current wardrobe – it helps us understand how to sew given part of outfit.
